English Teaching in Nepal

The purpose of study was to make a historical survey of pedagogic analysis of English language teaching\learning activities and particularly, this dissertation has mainly focused on comparative study of latest methods call oral structural situational approach and communicative approach. The study was carried out with the hypothesis that "Teaching English at secondary level can effectively carried out only through the proper use of communicative approach."
It was found that the schools of Kavre district have not used oral structural situational approach, the teachers and learners were very interesting to use communicative approach, the target aim of teaching\learning English language in Kavre district is not fulfilled. The researcher thinks that similar situation prevails all over Nepal.

On the basis of the findings of the study, the following conclusions have been drawn.
(i)                  The teachers of Kavre district are not fully known about the application of communicative approach, but due to the lack of proper training, they are not successful to motivate the students
All the teachers and the headmasters realize that due to present approach teaching new course design, many students have not failed in S.L.C. examination in English subject as compared with the previous S.L.C. results.
Still, the teachers have compulsion to use Nepali language in the classroom because the students have poor base in English.
Most of the schools have not provided English newspapers and sufficient materials of teaching aids like cassette player, visual aids etc. The condition of the libraries is very poor.
The headmasters have no knowledge of English language teaching, so they feel difficulty to observe the class of English teachers.
The teachers have no time of checking homework regularly, because they have to teach six or seven periods in a day, about 100 students in class.
Mostly, the students do not know anything about question model of S.L.C. before sent up examination.
The headmasters and the subject teachers have the following common views about the weakness of students in English.
English is not our national language.
The backgrounds of students are poor in elementary level.

They hesitate to speak English outside the class room. So, they have to talk in English outside the classroom also.
